MS Dhoni and Chennai Super Kings made a triumphant return to the Chepauk Stadium and put aside the defeat they suffered in the opening match as Dhoni smashed two consecutive sixes in the three balls he faced in the last over as CSK scored 217/7. Lucknow Super Giants made a good fist and managed to reach 205/7 but it was not enough
Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) failed to chase down a mammoth target of 218 after their skipper KL Rahul won the toss and opted to bowl first against MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings in their Indian Premier League faceoff at Chepauk on Monday.
CSK batted first with a brilliant knock from classy Ruturaj Gaikwad and Kiwi opener Devon Conway setting the platform for CSK to post a big total. Gaikwad played with the LSG bowlers making the batting look easy. His departure started slowing things down but the late arrival of Dhoni and Rayudu powered CSK to achieve 217/7 in 20 overs.
In response, LSG got off to a sensational start with KL Rahul and Kayel Mayers. The West Indian smashed a 21-ball 50 to set Lucknow in motion to chase down the total. However, LSG kept conceding goals at regular intervals and this proved to be their undoing. Moeen Ali played with the ball taking four wickets as Chennai Super Kings beat Lucknow Super Giants by 12 runs.
Back on the home ground, CSK captain Dhoni judiciously made the use of the slow bowlers to secure the team's first win in IPL 2023. Veteran Moeen Ali striked the wickets of LSG captain KL Rahul, Krunal Pandya, Mayers, and Marcus Stoinis (21) to nullify LSG's chase. Fast bowlers Tushar Deshpande (4-0-45-2) and Deepak Chahar (4-0-55-0), smashed three wides with two no-balls in their opening over which conceded a disappointing 18 runs.
LSG managed to put a damper on CSK's free-scoring batsmen thanks to a brilliant spell by off-spinner Ravi Bishnoi (3 for 28 in 4 overs) in the middle overs. Gaikwad and Conway got in to bat first and achieved 79 runs in the first 6 overs, also took full advantage of the fielding limitations.
