Incessant rain forced wash out of second ODI at Christchurch between New Zealand and Sri Lanka
BADSHAHBOOK: Rain again had the last word in Christchurch for the second ODI in a row. Damp weather in the Garden City on Tuesday saw the second ODI between the Black Caps and Sri Lanka at Hagley Oval abandoned without a bowl being bowled.
The match got cancelled
Persistent rain in Christchurch meant the second ODI between New Zealand and Sri Lanka was washed out without a toss. Although the rain was in the forecast for most of the day, there was still hope that a shortened match would be played at some point.
But as the day wore on and the rain continued to fall at Hagley Oval, that prospect looked less and less likely. The match was officially called off at 4.30pm due to persistent rain in the city for most of the day.
The cut-off for the 20-over game, the minimum allowed for rain-restricted ODIs, was set at 19:02 local time, but due to persistent rain, the umpires called off the match after a final inspection at 16:25.
As an effect, after the teams shared points, Sri Lanka's expectations of automatic World Cup qualification were severely hit.

The top 8 teams in the table of the Super League got direct entry to the World Cup, but Sri Lanka is currently 9th on 82 points having just one match remaining in the cycle - the third ODI against New Zealand in three days.
While the win moves them above the West Indies and into eighth place, Sri Lanka will be hoping that tenth-ranked South Africa win at most one of the two upcoming ODIs against the Netherlands.
This leaves South Africa at 88 points and Sri Lanka, who are finishing on 92 if they get to beat New Zealand, may make it to the World Cup.
However, New Zealand are set to end the Super League as table-toppers despite the setback in Christchurch, even if they lose to Sri Lanka in the third ODI in Hamilton. They currently have 165 points - ten ahead of second-placed England - but will be hoping their fringe players get plenty of practice ahead of the World Cup.
