Gujarat Titans’ Kane Williamson injured and ruled out of the Indian Premier League

BADSHAHBOOK: Gujarat Titans batsman Kane Williamson has been ruled out of the Indian Premier League after suffering a knee injury in the IPL opener against Chennai Super Kings at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Friday.

The 32-year-old injured himself after a nasty fall as he stood on the boundary during CSK's innings. He limped off the pitch in the 13th over.

Williamson, who was making his debut for Gujarat Titans, caught the ball heading towards the bat of Ruturaj Gaikwad, who could have launched CSK's six.

He managed to field the ball before it bounced on the boundary ropes. But he fell awkwardly to the ground and clutched his right knee in pain.

After receiving treatment on the field, he was ruled out and did not return to bat. Sai Sudharsan began first as a substitute fielder then later replaced Williamson in the Titans playing XI under the Impact Player rule.

Gujarat Titans shared the information in a tweet: "We regret to announce that Kane Williamson has been ruled out of TATA IPL 2023 after sustaining an injury in the season opener against Chennai Super Kings. We wish our Titan a quick recovery and also hope for his early return."

Williamson will now be heading homeland New Zealand for further assessment. Gujarat Titans would replace the right-handed batsman and an announcement about the same will be made in due course.

"It is griefful to lose Kane due to an injury this early in the tournament. We wish him a speedy recovery and hope to see him in action soon," GT Director of Cricket Vikram Solanki said in a press release.

The Titans are yet to name a replacement but said an announcement about the same will be made in due course.

It will be interesting to see who replaces Williamson in the squad. NZ dough was bought by GT for R2 million in a mini auction in December. Former India batsman Sanjay Manjrekar has advised GT to replace Williamson with Australian Steve Smith if the Black Caps star is not fit in time.

New Zealand coach Gary Stead had earlier shared a less-than-encouraging update on Williamson's injury, predicting the worst. "I just sent him a message. He (Williamson) has gone for scans, once he comes back from the scans and the doctors check him, then only we will know what exactly it is," he said.

Kane Williamson was bought by GT in the IPL 2023 auction last year for Rs 2 crore.

He represented Sunrisers Hyderabad from his IPL debut from 2015 to 2022. In his IPL career, he scored 2,101 runs in 77 matches at an average of 36.22. He scored eighteen fifties in his career with a best score of 89.
