Former Indian captain Kapil Dev has said that India's star batsman Suryakumar Yadav should not be compared to wicket-keeper batsman Sanju Samson. The World Cup winning captain also asked that if Samson goes through a bad phase, will we talk about someone else?
Speaking on ABP News, Kapil said, “A cricketer who has played so well always gets more chances. It doesn't feel right to compare Surya with Sanju Samson. If Sanju goes through a bad phase, you'll be talking about someone else."

“This shouldn't happen. If the team management’s decision is to back Suryakumar Yadav, he must get more chances. Yes, people will speak up and have their say, but at the end of the day it's a leadership challenge,” he added.

Kapil, on the other hand, backed the team's decision stating that it is pretty easy to gossip after the match is over. Perhaps the intention behind placing Suryakumar at No.7 was to provide him with an opportunity as a finisher. This (batting order shuffling) is nothing new in ODIs. This has happened many times before."
“Yes, sometimes it can happen that a batsman's confidence is damaged if he has been dragged down the order. But the onus is on the player to tell his captain that 'I can manage in the top order.' The coach and the captain had to take the decision with special consideration,” he added.
Surya has scored 433 runs in ODIs at an average of 24.05. Contrary to this, Samson has played 11 matches and scored 330 runs at an average of 66. Samson has done well for India in the limited opportunities he has been given in ODI cricket.
