BADSHAHBOOK: Harmanpreet Kaur-led Mumbai Indians created history by becoming the first team to win the inaugural edition of the Women's Premier League (WPL). After dominating the tournament, the team produced a similar show in the final where they secured a commanding seven-wicket victory over Delhi Capitals.

 

Delhi Capitals captain Meg Lanning won the toss and elected to bat first against Mumbai Indians in the Women's Premier League final on Sunday. DC scored 131 runs after finishing the batting innings first and Harmanpreet Kaur posted down the target having 3 balls and 7 wickets in hand. DC-W booked their place in the finals straight from the league stage of the tournament by finishing at the top of the points table, while Mumbai Indians had to play an Eliminator 2 clash with UP Warriorz, which they won convincingly on Friday night, to qualify. MI finished 2nd in the points table, thanks to a lower NRR than DC despite having the same number of points.

However, the move backfired as Delhi never got going and kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Issy Wong became the pick of the bowlers with three smashing wickets in the PowerPlay. The first tremors disrupted the DC launch, which they were unable to recover. At 79/9 at one stage, Delhi looked to be rock bottom but 52 runs in 24 balls with three sixes and five fours in the partnership between Shikha Pandey and Radha Yadav lifted Delhi Capitals to a respectable score.

MI Women's win added 5 men's Indian Premier League (IPL) trophies to their list in addition to the two Champions League trophies won by the men's side.
