BADSHAHBOOK: Former Indian cricketer Salim Durani died on Sunday at the age of 88. The Kabul-born cricketer was renowned for his slow orthodox left arm and batting ability. He striked 75 wickets in 29 Test matches, including three 5-wicket hauls. He used to live with Jahangir Durrani, his younger brother, in Jamnagar, Gujarat.
Former Indian cricketer Ravi Shastri showed his grief tweeting: "No doubt, one of India's most vibrant cricketers - Salim Durani. Rest in peace. Aum shanti."
In the 1960-1973 era, Durani made his presence felt with his sheer ability to send the ball flying into the stands. He was versatile and had a unique ability to finish the game with either bat or ball. He was part of India's successful victory against England in 1961-62.
Born in Afghanistan and of Pashtun descent, Durani was known for his batting and bowling skills that enthralled the audience.
In domestic cricket tournaments, Durani participated in the Ranji Trophy for Saurashtra, Rajasthan and Gujarat. He is most famous for his outstanding performance in India's series win against England in 1961-62, taking 8 and 10 wickets in Kolkata and Chennai respectively.

“He will always be in our memories for hitting sixes whenever the crowd demanded it. Smashing sixes during that era was rare,” remembered a family friend from Mumbai.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi called his demise: "Salim Durani Ji was a legend of cricket, an institution in his own right." He made a key contribution to the rise of India in the world of cricket. He was known for his style on and off the field. The pain of his death. My condolences to his family and friends. May his soul rest in peace. Salim Durani Ji always had a very strong and old relationship with Gujarat. He played for Gujarat and Saurashtra for several years. He also made Gujarat his home. I got the opportunity to have an interaction with him and was largely amazed by the multifaceted personality he had. He will surely be missed.
"Durani underwent proximal femur surgery by Dr. Nehal Shah for a fractured femur on Friday between 4 and 6 pm in Jamnagar. He was conscious and on oxygen. Currently, his nephew Sajid is by his side," he said. Jaypal Singh Jadeja.
Earlier, the former Indian great fell at his home and underwent surgery on the proximal femoral nail, according to a Saurashtra Cricket Association (SCA) official.
